The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has provided clarity on the regulatory framework surrounding the use of methylcobalamin, a
form of Vitamin B12, in health supplements, medical purposes and nutraceutical products. Dr. Sanjay Agrawal, Scientific Advisor at Alkomex, shared the
details in a recent statement. Dr. Agrawal emphasized, “As per the Food Safety and Standards (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, and Prebiotic and Probiotic Food) Regulations, 2022, the permitted forms of Vitamin B12 currently include cyanocobalamin and
hydroxocobalamin. However, methylcobalamin may also be permitted under certain conditions, provided that food business operators notify the Food
Authority and submit any additional safety data requested.”
